MONAGHAN MARCH PAST DERRY

Monaghan 0-15 Derry 0-10 By JOHN GRAHAM A more resilient Monaghan enhanced their prospects of reaching the NFL Division 1 semi finals and possibly even more importantly of retaining division 1 status for next season, when they had five points to spare over Derry at the end of this absorbing if at certain stages never spectacular contest that was played in wintry conditions in Clones on Sunday last. This was a result that Monaghan richly deserved in that they were the more cohesive unit throughout and it is a result too that underlines their ...

LEAGUES MOVING FROM HAZY TO CRYSTAL CLEAR STAGE

By Kevin Carney Last Sunday in Clones was as good a day for Monaghan as it was a bad day for Derry. Malachy O’Rourke’s troops responded to the advent of spring with a spring-heeled display that now leaves the Oak Leafers on the cusp of relegation. In contrast, it’s all looking pretty for O’Rourke and co. and they can now eye a place in the semi-finals with some confidence. Monaghan largely dictated the pace of the game at St. Tighernach’s Park. Derry were off the pace for most of the game and even ...

OUR LADY’S IMPRESS IN ALL-MONAGHAN MACLARNON CUP

Our Lady’s Secondary School, Castleblayney ended a ten-year wait in some style when they won Tuesday’s all-Monaghan Danske Bank Ulster Colleges MacLarnon Cup Final against Patrician High School, Carrickmacross in Armagh. Like in the 2005 final, Our Lady’s hit four goals, but this time they were much more convincing winners than a decade ago, when they only managed to kick one point. Both teams had impressed on their way to this decider, but goals by Micheál Bannigan, Jamie Walshe, James Wilson and Barry McGinn separated the teams. Bannigan produced a powerful ...

Monaghan made it back-to-back NFL Division 1 wins and a hat-trick of wins over Ulster oppositon with victory against Derry in Clones last Sunday. By COLM SHALVEY It was a very different game to the previous week’s win in Donegal, but the result was the same, as Monaghan kept their bid to stay in the top flight on track. Scores from play had been at a premium at O’Donnell Park, but Monaghan managed 0-14 in open play this time, including some top-drawer points. The game had much more to offer in terms ...

MONAGHAN SQUARE UP TO DONEGAL

By JOHN GRAHAM Monaghan 0-09 Donegal 1-04 MONAGHAN bounced back from their disappointing performance and result against Mayo in their previous outing to record a valuable and memorable NFL Division 1 victory against Donegal that catapulted them right back into the mix at O’Donnell Park last Sunday. Played in breezy conditions with bright sunshine at times this was a contest that never rose to any great heights and indeed was a dour spectacle at times but few in Monaghan will complain given the manner in which they struck for victory in the closing stages. Monaghan ...

NARRATIVE OF LEAGUES REMAIN UNCHANGED HEADING INTO THE BUSINESS END

By Kevin Carney Rory Gallagher walked off O’Donnell Park last Sunday with a hang-dog look. He looked like a man who had just been handed the bill for someone else’s meal. In contrast, Malachy O’Rourke’s countenance was one of mild satisfaction. It was as if both mentors recognised that Tir Chonaill’s loss in Letterkenny had all the potential of being a seminal outcome in the final design of the national league’s top flight. Three threatening weather-pocked fixtures lie ahead for Monaghan and Donegal and even if the counties get sucked into contests with ...

MONAGHAN HANDBALLERS ARE MAKING THE HEAD

MONAGHAN PANEL STRETCHED TO THE LIMIT FOR RETURN TO LETTERKENNY

Monaghan face an uphill battle in the Allianz National Football League Division One after a disastrous trip to McHale Park last Sunday. by COLM SHALVEY Monaghan went into last Sunday’s match away to Mayo in confident mood after encouraging performances against Tyrone and Cork, but left MacHale Park with their Division One campaign facing a different trajectory after a game dominated by red cards. Monaghan suffered a major setback before the game even began when Conor McManus was ruled out, with Darren Hughes also not fit to start. While Monaghan stayed ...

MONAGHAN NO MATCH FOR MAYO

Mayo 3-15 Monaghan  0-11 By JOHN GRAHAM   AN under strength Monaghan team slumped to a heavy defeat in this fairly rugged and at times bad tempered NFL Division 1 encounter played in bitterly cold and windy conditions at McHale Park, Castlebar, on Sunday last. Monaghan’s tale of woe began when they were reduced to 14 players with the seemingly harsh enough dismissal of Stephen Gollogly on a straight red card in the 27th minute of the first half after a linesman had called referee Rory Hickey’s attention to what looked an innocuous incident involving Gollogy. ...
