The north Monaghan man who was tragically killed in the earthquake that struck Christchurch, New Zealand on Tuesday has been named as 40-year-old Owen McKenna, who was originally from Brackagh, Emyvale. Mr McKenna, who was a general nurse and worked as manager of the accident and emergency department at the city’s main hospital, had moved to New Zealand in 2002. A native of Emyvale in Co Monaghan was recently awarded an honorary MBE in recognition of her long and distinguished service in the field of nursing. Mrs Ann Readhead, born Ann McKenna and from Figullar in Emyvale, was presented with the insignia of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by the British Minister for Public Health Anne Milton in the Department of Health in October. Christmas morning arrived. The temperature was minus ten Degrees Centigrade. The ground was covered in snow with eight inches of ice on Emy Lake (verified by Keith Murphy). Last year we only had to contend with a minus 8 temperature and three inches of ice. Large numbers from all over North Monaghan had travelled on treacherous roads, at great personal risk, to attend the swim. The organising committee had to sort matters out quickly.
