Kilkenny and Leinster champions Dunnamaggin staged a late rally to clinch the All Ireland club Junior hurling championship title at the expense of Castleblayney in this totally absorbing and thrilling encounter that was played in sunny if somewhat chilly conditions in Croke Park on Sunday afternoon last.

Ultimately the Cats had to dig deep into their reserves of courage and commitment to get the better of a resurgent Castleblayney who carried the battle to them particularly in the final ten minutes of the first half and during the third quarter, when they dictated play and had their more vaulted opponents rattled. Ultimately though, their greater experience of playing intermediate hurling in Kilkenny for the past number of years stood to them and they were able to effectively counter Castleblayney by closing them down and forcing errors which they ruthlessly punished, with seven unanswered points in the final quarter to come from being three points in arrears entering that period to winning by four at the finish.

The hand of history was on the shoulder of both protagonists in this unique pairing as it was the first time ever that either team had reached an All Ireland club final, but on the day heartbreak was to be…
