COUNCILLOR TREANOR GETS ROBUST RESPONSE TO THE QUESTION: “WHAT’S THE POINT OF CONFERENCES?”

Peter Hughes Independent member of Monaghan Co Council Seamus Treanor has called into question the value of elected representatives attending local authority conferences. But when Councillor Treanor posed the question: “What’s the point of conferences?” at Tuesday’s Co Council meeting, he got a robust response from Cathaoirleach David Maxwell. The Fine Gael Chair-holder answered: “Learning and networking”, and pointed Councillor Treanor to the widely perceived success of the recent Association of Irish Local Government (AILG) conference hosted in Monaghan Town. “Does anyone ever come back from conferences with news to enhance people’s lives? What is the point of them?” Councillor Treanor asked when referring to the “reports from members attending conferences” section of the monthly meeting agenda.

The Independent councillor added that he had only attended two conferences since he was elected to the Co Council. The Cathaoirleach said that he was delighted that one of the most recent conferences that members attended took place in his own town of Monaghan.
