CLUB FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS CRANK UP A GEAR

The club football championships have cranked up a gear and the busy schedule continues this weekend. Scotstown began their defence of the Greenfield Foods Senior Football Championship title with a comfortable win over Killanny on Sunday.

Scotstown started without Darren Hughes, Francis Caulfield, Dónal Morgan and Mark Duffy, but first-half goals from Conor McCarthy (two) and Shane Carey saw the holders take complete control. Scotstown had 12 scorers in all and although Killanny did belatedly mark their longawaited return to the SFC with a spirited finish that featured goals from Daryl Traynor and Gavin Flanagan, the game had long ceased to be a contest. Ballybay edged out Castleblayney after being pushed all the way on Saturday evening.

Christopher McGuinness (0-7) and Paul Finlay (0-5) hit the scores that led the Pearse Brothers through, while the accuracy of Dermot Malone (1-4) and Ciarán Hanratty (1-2) wasn’t enough to see Blayney get off to winning…
